NC GOP, TOM TILLIS ILLEGALLY COORDINATED WITH BOLTON SUPER PAC…

In case you missed it, last night the NC GOP and Sen. Thom Tillis made it on Rachel Maddow for illegally coordinating with John Bolton’s Super PAC. On his website, British citizen Tim Glister said he spent three months helping Thom Tillis’ 2014 senatorial campaign.

As an example of his work, Glister lists a pro-Tillis ad paid for by the John Bolton Super PAC, evidence that NC GOP, Tillis and Cambridge violated federal election laws stating that independent expenditure groups cannot coordinate with campaigns.

After Maddow requested a comment, Glister removed the advertisement and changed the wording on his website:

Before: “In 2014, I spent three months in North Carolina with an SCL consultancy team helping Tom Tillis’ successful senatorial campaign create highly targeted advertising…”

After: “In 2014, I spent three months in North Carolina with an SCL deployment team, providing a local political party with voter sentiment analysis…”

…AND BOLTON’S PAC COORDINATED WITH CAMBRIDGE ANALYTICA.

According to WRAL, John Bolton’s super-PAC worked with Cambridge Analytica on targeted ads supporting Thom Tillis’ 2014 U.S. Senate campaign. Cambridge designed five different versions of the same ad, and targeted them directly to viewers based on their personality type.

This close coordination raises serious questions around whether NC GOP, Tillis, Cambridge and the BoltonSuper PAC broke election law.

WRAL:

FOREIGN NATIONALS ILLEGALLY EMBEDDED IN TILLIS CAMPAIGN

Glister is the fourth source confirming that foreign nationals were on the ground and involved in decision making for the Tillis campaign. Why then are NC GOP and Sen. Tillis continuing to lie by stating that no foreign worker worked in NC in 2014? According to Cambridge whistleblower Wylie:

"There were three or four full-time CA staffers embedded in Tillis's campaign on the ground in Raleigh. All of them were foreign nationals."

"We weren't just working on messaging. We were instructing campaigns on which messages go where and to who."

THE DATA IS STILL OUT THERE…

Channel 4 broke the news yesterday that the Facebook data Cambridge Analytica illegally harvested is still out there, despite promises that it’s been deleted. According to Channel 4, “copies of the Facebook-derived data still exist,” which raises serious questions for the NC GOP, including:

  • Does the NC GOP still have this data and are they still using it?
  • Was this data used in any elections other than in 2014?
  • Was the data used for state work?
  • If the data was deleted, what proof does the NC GOP have that it’s gone?

Channel 4:

…AND NEITHER TILLIS OR THE NC GOP CAN KEEP THEIR STORY STRAIGHT

Sen. Tillis and the NC GOP are tied up in knots after a whistleblower exposed their involvement with Cambridge Analytica in 2014. Sen Tillis claims Cambridge performed “limited services” for his campaign, despite admitting to paying the firm a $100K win bonus for $30K worth of work.

Meanwhile, Dallas Woodhouse has contradicted himself three different times to three different outlets on three different days:

Friday, 3/23, toNBC News:"A spokesman for the Republican Party of North Carolina also said the Cambridge Analytica workers were not embedded in the Tillis campaign, but worked for the state party."

Saturday, 3/24,to WRAL:In an interview with WRAL News, NCGOP director Dallas Woodhouse, who was not with the party in 2014, could neither confirm nor deny that any Cambridge Analytica personnel were working for the party on the ground in North Carolina in 2014. "I don’t know whether that’s true or not or whether they had a foreign nationality," Woodhouse told WRAL News.

Sunday, 3/25,to Washington Post:“No foreign workers worked for us,” Woodhouse said.

It’s clear Cambridge Analytica did more than ‘limited work’ for Thom Tillis. When will Tillis and NC GOP drop the charade and start telling the truth?

ACP FUND EXPANDS MAP FOR NC DEMS

Republican lawmakers stepped on a landmine when they raided the Atlantic Coast Pipeline fund for purely political reasons. Their partisan attacksput new districts in rural, eastern North Carolina into playfor 2018 and NC Democrats are on the offensive, ensuring Eastern NC knows their representatives threatened jobs in their communities.

"Republicans will do anything that hurts public education ... Even more, they’re so bent on hurting the Governor, they’re happy to hurt the state.Which gives Democrats the greatest message in politics: Throw the bums out."
- Gary Pearce, Talking About Politics

REPUBLICAN ATTACKS ON PIPELINE FUND CONFIRMED

This week Politifact confirmed that Republican lawmakers jeopardized a fund meant to create jobs in Eastern North Carolina. Earlier this month, the party launched digital ads and mailers to spread the word that GOP lawmakers put $57.8 million in jobs and economic opportunity on the line for politics.According to Politifact:

“…the party’s broader point is accurate. Republicans led the push to empty the mitigation fund and Democrats reluctantly went along with the effort because it was tied to education changes they supported.”

MEANWHILE, GOP LAWMAKERS LIE TO THEIR CONSTITUENTS ABOUT ACP FUND

GOP lawmakers have resorted to outright lies in their desperate effort to distract from their overtly partisan attacks on the pipeline fund. When GOP Majority Leader Harry Brown was asked whether the ACP fund was meant to help fund new gas hookups, creating jobs in Eastern NC, Sen. Brown lied to his constituents, saying, “First time I’ve heard of that.”

To refresh Sen. Brown’s memory, here’sAP fromwhen the news first broke

Gov. Roy Cooper’s office separately announced pipeline partners Dominion Power and Duke Energy will spend $58 million on environmental initiatives such as expanding renewable energy.Funds can also be used for offshoots that allow North Carolina communities along the pipeline’s path to offer natural gas to their businesses, the governor’s office said.

Here’s the Governor’s officeannouncing the fund:

ACP and its partners Dominion Power and Duke Energy will put $57.8 million into the fund to be used for environmental mitigation initiatives such as reducing the carbon footprint and expansion of renewable energy sources.Funds can also be used to ensure that local communities benefit economically from the pipeline by havingaccess to natural gas from the pipeline.ACP did not guarantee affordable access to natural gas for communities through which the pipeline will run.

Here’sWRAL’s deep-diveinto how the fund was established:

Much of the money would have been used to help companies and farmers in eastern North Carolinahook into distribution lines tied back to the pipeline, covering the cost of expensive last-mile infrastructure that has to be built before gas can flow, the administration has said.

Here'sinternal emails from the Commerce departmentworried about paying for the gas hookups:

Commerce'sprimary concern, the emails show, involved the ability of North Carolina companies to directly tap into the pipeline for their own natural gas needs.

Here'sthe letter from the Governor's officeto GOP leaders answering questions about the fund:

As you know, the ACP agreed to provide funds to support economic development and additional environmental protection in the eight counties where the pipeline is being constructed.Specifically, these funds were intended to provide a public benefit by expanding access to the pipelinewhile mitigating the adverse environmental effects created by the pipeline.

ICYMI: REPUBLICANS DECLARE WAR ON THE COURTS

NC GOP, keeping right in line with their national counterparts, have plotted to rig our courts to their liking because they keep losing in court. GOP leaders have hinted that we’ll see further efforts to rig the judiciary, either through gerrymandering or just allowing the legislature to outright cherry pick their favorite judges.

Mother Jones

“No state has done more to undermine the independence of the judiciary than North Carolina. The Republicanled legislature there has embarked on an unprecedented plan totransformthe state’s courtsby gerrymandering judicial maps to elect more Republican judges, making judicial elections partisan instead of nonpartisan, and possibly even allowing the legislature to pick judges instead of the voters. Courtshave overturned 14 lawspassed by the North Carolina legislature since 2011. But instead of changing their policies, Republicans are trying to radically change the makeup of the state’s courts.”

THOUSANDS PARTICIPATE IN MARCH FOR OUR LIVES

Last weekend, thousands of people across the state gathered and marched to protest gun violence and to advocate for common sense gun laws. NC Democrats believe our children deserve to feel safe at school each day and we are proud to stand beside Governor Cooper in the call for strong, bipartisan gun reforms such as banning bump stocks, raising the assault weapon purchasing age, expanding background checks, and implementing red-flag laws.

WHAT EDITORIAL BOARDS ARE SAYING THIS WEEK

On gun reform…

Washington Post:
It remains to be seen if the students will succeed in getting Congress to take some action. But they made one thing pretty clear —they aren't going away. When they are able to vote — and for many, that will be soon — they could ensure that those who do go away are the ones who stand in the way of protecting lives.”

Fayetteville Observer:
So far this year, we are averaging one school shooting a week across America. It’s clear that the problem is serious, and may be getting worse. The crusading Parkland kids are right: They should be able to feel safe in their classrooms. And we adults are the ones who can make them safer. North Carolina lawmakers need to check their partisanship at the door and come up with legislation that makes it happen.”
